GEOGRAPHY
The state of Oaxaca is located in southern Mexico. It borders
the states of Puebla and Veracruz to the north, Chiapas to
the east, Guerrero to the west and Pacific Ocean to the south.
Covering 95,364sq. Km (59,258 sq, miles) of hills, valleys,
canyons and beaches, Oaxaca is Mexico’s most biologically
diverse state.
POPULATION
The State of Oaxaca has 3,428,895 inhabitants, mainly mestizos.
Sixteen ethnic groups, each with their own language or dialect,
inhabit different geographical areas of the state. The population
in the city is 250,000 thousand people and on the suburbs
550,000 thousand old together. IMPORTANT HISTORICAL
BACKGROUNDS
Oaxaca city, capital of the state of the same name, is located
534 km. from Mexico City southeast. In 1532, it was given
the title of “Noble and loyal City of Antequera”
by Carlo’s V of Spain. In 1821 the name of the city
was changed to “Oaxaca,”. The word derived from
the Nahuatl language, huaxyacac meaning “in the nose
of the juajes” When native son Benito JUAREZ, known
as the benefactor of America, died in 1872, the name of the
city was changed to “Oaxaca de JUAREZ.”
CLIMATE AND SEASONS
In the city of Oaxaca, which is located in the central valley,
the average annual temperature is 22°C.

POLITICAL STRUCTURE
The United States of Mexico is a democracy. Its Constitution,
which dates from 1917, establishes the powers of the Executive,
Legislative and Judicial branches of the government.
LANGUAGE
Spanish is Mexico’s official language. However, 8 percent
of the population speaks 54 autochthonous languages. Seventeen
languages and several dialects are spoken in the State of
Oaxaca.
CURRENCY
México’s monetary unit is the Peso, which is
represented by the symbol $. Coins come in denomination of
1, 2, 5, and 10 pesos. And bills in denomination of 20, 50,
100, 200, 500 and 1000 pesos.
RELIGION
Although 89.7% of Mexicans are catholic, many religions are
practiced freely throughout the country.
HEALTH PRECAUTIONS
The water in Oaxaca and in most of the country is potable.
However, since it may become contaminated in transit or while
in storage, we recommend using bottled water as a precautionary
measure.
ELECTICITY
Mexico operates on the 110-volt, 60-cycle system. Travelers
using appliances that require another voltage or a different
type of plug would be wise to carry the necessary adapters
with them.
